A patch pump is a catheter-less insulin pump, which is applied directly to the skin and delivers insulin continuously via a small cannula inserted under the skin. It consists of an insulin reservoir, infusion mechanism and control system, rendering it discreet and easy to use. The device is also available with increasing levels of water resistance or waterproofing, allowing the user to carry out activities such as showering, swimming or sports more easily without having to remove it.
The main benefits include greater freedom of movement, improved comfort and, for many users, improved control over blood sugar levels. The catheter-less design and direct adherence to the body make it particularly suitable for people who are physically active.
