Epidural fibrosis is an often invisible but profoundly disabling condition that can affect those who have already undergone spinal surgery or experienced episodes of chronic pain. This condition is caused by the formation of scar tissue in the epidural space, a delicate area surrounding the nerve roots at the base of the back. When this tissue develops, it can wrap around or compress the nerves, preventing them from moving freely and causing symptoms such as persistent pain, tingling, weakness or burning in the lower limbs. For those who are affected by this condition, epidural fibrosis can mean a reduced quality of life, with limitations in their daily movements and sleep patterns. Understanding this condition is the first step towards dealing with it.

The Racz procedure is one of the techniques used to treat chronic pain, particularly that caused by scar tissue adhering to the spinal canal.
It involves inserting a specific catheter (Racz-type catheter) into the peridural space, followed by administering a mixture of drugs (hyaluronidase, slow-release cortisone and local anaesthetic) to reduce inflammation and release compressed or stretched nerve roots.
