Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology provides patients with real time information about their blood glucose levels, 24 hours a day, by means of a small sensor positioned on their skin.
This continually updated information enables CGM users to monitor their blood sugar levels constantly, intervene early and improve their diabetes management, thus reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia.
Small on the outside, powerful on the inside
A CGM system consists of:
- A sensor inserted under the skin, which measures the patient’s glucose level once every few minutes.
- A transmitter, attached to or integrated into the sensor, which transmits the collected data to a receiver device, smart-phone or insulin pump.
- A visualisation device that displays real-time blood sugar values, trends and alarms if levels are too high or too low.
How continuous monitoring improves diabetes management.
- Reduction of hypoglycaemias: through continuous monitoring it is possible to detect falls in blood sugar levels before obvious symptoms appear, helping to prevent episodes of hypoglycaemia, even when inadvertent.
- Predictivity: some systems are also equipped with a 'predictive alarm' that warns the user of a possible impending hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia, based on the rate of change of glucose levels measured by the sensor.
- Greater awareness: the acquired data facilitates understanding of the impact of diet, physical activity and stress on blood sugar levels.
